The short version

Microsoft retired AI-900 and AI-102 on 30 June 2026. You can no longer book either one. Their replacements are AI-901, which is still called Azure AI Fundamentals, and AI-103, Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure. Both new exams lean much more heavily on building things.

If you were studying for AI-900 or AI-102, or you were about to book one, this is what changed and where to go next.

What happened

Both exams were retired at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time on 30 June 2026, as listed on Microsoft's retired exams page. They were part of a wider clear-out: Microsoft says it retired several certifications between June and August 2026 "as part of the shift to AI-era skilling".

AI-900 is now AI-901

The certification keeps its name, Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals, but the exam behind it is now AI-901. The bigger change is what it tests:

AI-901 skill areaWeight
Identify AI concepts and capabilities40–45%
Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry55–60%

More than half of the new fundamentals exam is about building with Microsoft Foundry, not just knowing what AI services exist. If you prepared for AI-900 by learning definitions, AI-901 asks for noticeably more hands-on familiarity. The pass mark is 700. (AI-901 study guide, skills as of 15 April 2026.)

AI-102 is now AI-103

AI-103: Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure leads to the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate certification. Microsoft released it on 19 June 2026, just before AI-102 retired.

AI-103 skill areaWeight
Plan and manage an Azure AI solution25–30%
Implement generative AI and agentic solutions30–35%
Implement computer vision solutions10–15%
Implement text analysis solutions10–15%
Implement information extraction solutions10–15%

Generative AI and agents are now the single biggest area. The pass mark is 700. (AI-103 study guide, skills as of 16 April 2026.)

Already passed AI-900 or AI-102?

Microsoft's wording is that associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually and are renewed with a free online assessment. Fundamentals certifications, like Azure AI Fundamentals, aren't on that list. Microsoft's partner guidance also says a certification completed before its retirement date stays valid for one year. Check the expiry date on your Microsoft Learn profile.
