DP-700 at a glance
Exam DP-700 (Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric) splits its weight evenly across three domains. Each is listed at 30–35% in the official study guide, so no domain is safe to skip. This plan gives each domain a week and then names the decision traps that cost candidates points.
What the exam covers
The study guide lists three skill areas, each weighted 30–35%:
| Domain | Weight | Main subtopics |
|---|---|---|
| Implement and manage an analytics solution | 30–35% | Workspace settings, lifecycle management, security and governance, orchestration |
| Ingest and transform data | 30–35% | Loading patterns, batch data, streaming data |
| Monitor and optimize an analytics solution | 30–35% | Monitoring Fabric items, resolving errors, performance optimization |
Microsoft says a score of 700 or greater is required to pass, and the certification page gives 100 minutes for the exam. That page shows a last-updated date of 10/19/2026. Re-check the study guide shortly before you book, because Microsoft revises skills outlines. The guide also notes that most questions cover generally available features, and that preview features can appear if they are commonly used.
The guide expects you to be skilled at manipulating and transforming data with SQL, PySpark and Kusto Query Language (KQL). If one of those is weak, fix it first.
A three-week plan
Week 1: implement and manage
Work through the four areas in the study guide in order.
- Workspace settings: Spark, domain, OneLake and data workflow settings.
- Lifecycle management: version control, database projects and deployment pipelines.
- Security and governance: the guide separates workspace-level and item-level access from row-level, column-level, object-level and file-level controls. It also lists dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels and endorsement. Build one small example of each rather than only reading about them.
- Orchestration: choose between a pipeline and a notebook, set schedules and event-based triggers, and use parameters and dynamic expressions.
Week 2: ingest and transform
This domain is about picking the right tool for the data and then writing the transformation. Cover full versus incremental loads, preparing data for a dimensional model, and a loading pattern for streaming data. For batch work, practise shortcuts, mirroring, pipelines, and transformations in PySpark, SQL and KQL, plus handling duplicate, missing and late-arriving data. For streaming, practise eventstreams, Spark structured streaming, KQL and windowing functions.
Week 3: monitor and optimize
Learn what to look at when something fails. The guide lists error resolution separately for pipelines, dataflows, notebooks, eventhouses, eventstreams and T-SQL. Then cover optimization for lakehouse tables, pipelines, warehouses, eventstreams and eventhouses, Spark and queries. Finish with timed practice questions across all three domains.
Trap 1: choosing the wrong ingestion tool
Microsoft’s decision guide compares pipeline copy activity, Copy job, Dataflow Gen2, Eventstream and Spark. The cues are the same ones exam scenarios use:
| Scenario cue | Tool the guide points to |
|---|---|
| Large-scale raw copy, no-code or low-code, on a schedule | Pipeline copy activity |
| Wizard-driven incremental copy from CDC-enabled tables | Copy job |
| Power Query skills, 300+ transformation functions, low to medium volume | Dataflow Gen2 |
| Event data forwarded as it occurs, no extraction schedule | Eventstream |
| Custom code, complex transformation of structured, semi-structured or unstructured data | Spark |
The guide describes copy activity and Copy job transformation as lightweight (type conversion, column mapping, merging or splitting files, flattening hierarchy). If a question needs real business logic, the answer is rarely copy activity.
Trap 2: shortcuts versus mirroring
Both bring outside data into view in Fabric, and the exam likes to test the difference.
- According to the shortcuts documentation, shortcuts connect to existing data without directly copying it. They behave like symbolic links.
- Deleting a shortcut leaves the target unaffected. Deleting a file or folder inside a shortcut can delete it in the target if you have permission there.
- In a lakehouse, shortcuts in the Tables folder can only be created at the top level. In the Files folder you can create them at any level.
- The mirroring overview says database mirroring replicates data into OneLake as Delta tables, kept in sync automatically. Metadata mirroring is different: it synchronizes catalog, schema and table metadata and uses shortcuts, so the data stays in the source.
- Open mirroring lets your own application land change data in a mirrored database through public APIs.
So a requirement for “no copy of the data” points toward shortcuts or metadata mirroring. A requirement for a continuously updated replica in OneLake points toward database mirroring.
Trap 3: pipeline or notebook
The orchestration subtopic asks you to choose between a pipeline and a notebook. Use the same decision guide: pipelines suit moving data and orchestrating steps with little code, while notebooks suit custom Spark logic. Questions often combine them, with a pipeline that passes parameters into a notebook. Make sure you can describe where the parameters are defined and how dynamic expressions pass them in.
Trap 4: security at the wrong level
Because the study guide separates workspace-level, item-level and finer-grained controls, expect scenarios that ask for the narrowest control that meets the need. If only a subset of rows or columns must be hidden, a workspace role is the wrong answer. Practise matching each requirement to the smallest control that satisfies it.
How to use practice questions
Microsoft’s study guide points to a practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, and notes that the legacy Learn version is no longer updated. After each week, take a timed set, and for every miss write down which domain and which decision rule you got wrong. Review those notes in the last two days instead of rereading documentation.
